Michael Punter: Dramatist and Teacher
“Punter not only writes beautifully and intelligently, but he plays on the very idea of language”
(The Guardian on The Wolves)
My first play The Wolves (1997) was produced by Paines Plough, published by Faber and Faber and short-listed for the George Devine and Margaret Ramsay awards. I went on to develop two new versions of plays by Aristophanes for young people: The Wasps (1998) and The Birds (2000), for Watford Palace and Birmingham Rep theatres respectively. I then had the good fortune to join the Dramatic Links programme, which attached playwrights to creative projects in London primary schools. Two new plays for children resulted, The Nightwatch (2002) and Dummy (2004). Both were produced by Pop-Up theatre and toured the UK, with The Nightwatch winning an award from the Margaret Ramsay Foundation.
I then wrote Tribe: A Victorian Fantasy (2006) inspired by the works of HG Wells for a large company of young people at the Brighton Festival. Upstart Crows (2007) a commission to Dulwich College and the Young Pleasance Company followed. It traces the friendship between Christopher Marlowe and the actor Edward Alleyn and was subsequently produced at the Edinburgh Festival.
Darker Shores, a ghost story, was produced on Hampstead Theatre’s main stage (2009-10), followed by Stagefright (2012) a play about Bram Stoker, Henry Irving and the writing of Dracula. Bunker Girls (2014) a dark comedy about Hitler’s secretaries, was performed at Waterloo East Theatre.
American Soviet (2016) was performed at the Rarig Center, Minneapolis USA and 1066: Three Kings (2016) was produced as part of the Root 1066 International Festival, commemorating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. In 2018. Skerryvore: A Tale of Terror was produced at the London Horror Festival and at the Old Operating Theatre, London Bridge.
Most of my plays are available for professional or amateur performance. Please see the Plays page for details of cast breakdowns and a brief synopsis.
